Police presence is a good thing, in your neighborhood on our highways, and roadways, and at public events. Recurring police presence at your commercial or residential property may give the impression to tenants, prospects, and other sources of revenue that your property is unsafe.

So, how do you eliminate the unnecessary calls to the Police Department for image and nuisance abatement considerations?

1. Education
Educating tenants about WHEN to call the Police vs. Maintenance or other appropriate personnel can reduce unnecessary Police presence. Many people are unaware that the Police are in fact not maintenance men and as such have called the Police for everything from the wrong order in a fast food restaurant to unclogging a toilet. While this may seem silly, I can attest that i’ve met officers responding to a “flooding” toilet all the way to light bulbs in the parking lot being burned out.

2. Proactive Measures
A burned out light bulb may not warrant Albuquerque SWAT, but it should warrant your attention. Dark areas of a property are customarily perceived as areas in which vandalism, property crime, and “suspicious” activity occur. Fixing problems on your property such as burned out lights, graffiti, broken windows, shattered glass, and broken sprinkler heads not only improve your property image, but may prevent a good intentioned tenant from notifying the wrong party, thereby increasing Police presence on your property.
